Juanita Bay Residence

Kirkland, Washington

2001-2002

This northwest contemporary residence was designed for a family who had two site priorities; provide ample backyard space for the kids to play outdoors, as well as maximize views to the west across Juanita Bay and Lake Washington.

Solar exposure was an important factor in the design, due to the site’s west exposure.  To create interest and help control the afternoon heat in Summer, large overhangs were added, some of which incorporate patios above.  Large walls of glass look onto the private backyard, as well as Kirkland and the waterfront to the west.  The site’s topographical constraints necessitated a daylight basement, which is used as a mother-in-law apartment, as well as the garage and wine cellar.
