Steamboat Outpost
Olympia, Washington
2019-2020
This unique 25 acre property sits along Totten Inlet on Puget Sound, and shares a common border with a land trust, which adds 33 more acres of forested privacy to the property.
Here, the deer roam freely and eagles fly overhead, while the owners are only minutes from downtown Olympia.
The modestly sized project, totaling just over 1000 sq ft, was envisioned as a complex of smaller buildings. Construction uses local materials of concrete, stone, wood, and a galvanized metal roof, creating a rustic, agrarian atmosphere across the building site.
The interior spaces are open and sophisticated, and are made larger through extensive use of glass, patio doors and terraces, all of which open to the privacy of the surrounding trees. An entry water feature, a fire pit in the garden, an orchard, as well as the conversion of a preexisting logging road into a personal nature trail allow endless hours of outside enjoyment.
